This short text says a lot!
First, we are to sing. The Bible is filled with admonitions to sing to the Lord. Listen to some of them:
Exodus 15:1 [ The Song of Moses ] Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the LORD, and spoke, saying:“I will sing to the LORD, For He has triumphed gloriously!
Psalm 13:6 I will sing to the LORD, Because He has dealt bountifully with me.
Psalm 98:1 Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.
Psalm 104:33 I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
Is 42:10 Sing to the LORD a new song, And His praise from the ends of the earth, You who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, You coastlands and you inhabitants of them!
Then, sing in one accord. Although it is not stated using “one accord,” the scripture implies singing together in agreement. The early church prayed together. They shared their lives together and that had to have included singing!
Acts 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication.
Acts 2:46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Ephesians 5:19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,
We sing with joy:
Psalm 81:1 Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob!
And sing with joy to the Lord:Psalm 33:1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
To whom do we sing? Christ, Our King:
Psalm 47:6 Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.
We use hymns of praise to sing to Him:
Psalm 40:3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.
Psalm 101:1 I will sing of your love and justice; to you, O LORD, I will sing praise.
