"Oh Sing That Name, the Name of Jesus"

Day 30

John continued writing up to the end of his life. The theme of his song? You are right! His wife Ruth said, “This was the last song Johnnie composed.”

"Oh Sing That Name, the Name of Jesus"

Oh, sing that name, the name of Jesus,
That name above all names in earth and heaven.
Sometimes in whispered prayer, then loudly sound
I love that name, that mighty name.

It is that name, the name of Jesus.
It conquers doubts and fears and brings us peace.
Adore Him Heaven above, on Earth let praises now begin.
Oh, praise His name.

At His coming that great name was given
By an angel brought down to Earth.
Now the maiden called by God and chosen
Holds the baby in her loving care.

She sings that name in a tender lullaby,
Oh wondrous mystery how can it be?
That precious name I love, that glorious matchless name of Jesus
Oh sing that name.

Proclaim that name, the name of Jesus
Now see the gates of Him swing open wide.
The saints now gather on streets of gold,
In radiant light, Oh what a day!

But still that name, the name of Jesus,
Shall ever reign supreme thru endless time
And all the heavenly host and saints from all the ageless past
Shall praise His name.

I will be there in that celebration
And I’ll join them in that song of praise
To the Savior who has given salvation
And has brought me to this place of joy.

Then still that name, the name of Jesus
Will be my endless theme while ages roll
And so I’ll sing it now and raise my voice
And loud His praise.

Jesus, oh how sweet the name
Jesus, every day the same
Jesus, let all saints proclaim
His worthy praise forever.

John’s entire writing career was spent lifting up and proclaiming the Name and Person of Jesus Christ, his Savior and Friend. Is it any wonder that he put music to the words of his dear friend and colleague, Lee Webber.

I can almost hear John exclaim those words: “Oh, sing that name, the name of Jesus!” with an emphasis on Oh, sing!

That name above all names in earth and heaven. (see Philippians 2:5-11)

There are times you want to whisper the Name…in hushed awe; other times shout the Name in victory or in battle.

Jesus’ name truly is mighty. For at the name of Jesus “every knee…..” (Philippians 2:10-11)

There are many scripture references and illusions in the text.

Study the text and use it as a devotional. Find where these verses are in the scriptures.

"My Song of Songs"

Day 29

"My Song of Songs"

1. My heart is filled with melody,
To Christ my Lord my very life belongs.
Since He came in I cannot help
But ever sing My Songs of Songs.

Chorus

My Song of Songs is Christ my Savior,
Of Him my heart shall ever sing.
He fills my life with joyous melody,
My Song of Songs is Jesus.

2. To think that Jesus died for me,
My heart is filled with never ending praise.
I want my life to glorify
The Savior’s name thru all my days.

Chorus

My Song of Songs is Christ my Savior,
Of Him my heart shall ever sing.
He fills my life with joyous melody,
My Song of Songs is Jesus.

My heart is filled with melody,

John was a great writer of melodies. Since he loved melodies and he loved Jesus, it is no wonder that this would be the lead line in the song that in my estimation sums up his life.

The word “melody” is used only a couple of times in the Bible.

Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, With the lyre and the sound of melody. (Psalm 98:5)

Indeed, the LORD will comfort Zion; He will comfort all her waste places And her wilderness He will make like Eden, And her desert like the garden of the LORD; Joy and gladness will be found in her, Thanksgiving and sound of a melody. (Isaiah 51:3)

“Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; (Ephesians 5:19)

Praise the LORD with the harp; Make melody to Him with an instrument of ten strings. (NKJV) (Psalm 33:2)

To Christ my Lord my very life belongs.

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)

Since He came in I cannot help
But ever sing My Songs of Songs.

The Lord is my song!

Three times the scriptures repeat the same thing: The Lord is my song!

The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him. (Exodus 15:;2)

The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. (Psalm 118:14)

Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation." (Isaiah 12:2)

Psalm 40 describes what happens when God changes a person’s life:

He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear
and put their trust in the LORD. (Psalm 40:2-3)

Of Him my heart shall ever sing.
He fills my life with joyous melody,
Luke 6:45 Jesus said, “The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.”

Isaiah 42:10 Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them.

I will bless the LORD at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul shall make its boast in the LORD;
The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
Oh, magnify the LORD with me,
And let us exalt His name together. (Psalm 34:1-3)

Psalm 9:2 I will be glad and exult in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.

My heart is filled with never ending praise.
"You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
You have loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness,
That my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent
O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever." (Psalm 30:11-12)

“My mouth is filled with Your praise
And with Your glory all day long.” (Psalm 71:8)

“My Days Are In His Hands”

Day 28

“My Days Are In His Hands”

(Click on music to enlarge)

Psalm 31:14-16

14 But I trust in you, O LORD;
I say, "You are my God."

15 My times are in your hands;
deliver me from my enemies
and from those who pursue me.

16 Let your face shine on your servant;
save me in your unfailing love.

"For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for Godgives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands." (John 3:34-35)

Notice in Psalm 139 that God know about you before you were born!

Psalm 139

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.

2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.

3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.

4 Before a word is on my tongue
you know it completely, O LORD.

5 You hem me in—behind and before;
you have laid your hand upon me.

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, [a] you are there.

9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,

10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.

11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,"

12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!

18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand.
When I awake,
I am still with you.

19 If only you would slay the wicked, O God!
Away from me, you bloodthirsty men!

20 They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.

21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD,
and abhor those who rise up against you?

22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

"By Your Side"

Day 27

"By Your Side"

1. Let me come to a place by Your side loving Lord.
Let me feel the warm touch of Your hand.
Fill my mind with Your wisdom, my heart with Your love,
And my soul with Your kind understanding.

Chorus:

I bring You my failures, my weaknesses too.
I bring You my sorrows and give them all to You.
Touch me, Lord, with Your Spirit, oh sweet Holy Spirit.
Gentle Lord, shine through me as You long to do.

2. Help me place all my cares at Your feet, loving Lord
And my future I leave in your hand.
Help me trust in your promise, rely on Your word
With a peace passing all understanding.

Chorus:

I bring You my failures, my weaknesses too.
I bring You my sorrows and give them all to You.
Touch me Lord with Your Spirit, oh sweet Holy Spirit
Gentle Lord, shine through me as You long to do.

Let me come to a place by Your side
Only there is my soul satisfied.

Text: by Margaret King and Leroy C. Weber
Music: John Hallett and Allan Davies

What kind of things do you pray for?

Have you ever felt that you had things too insignificant to bring to God in prayer? Actually, God is interested in you! So, whatever you are concerned with, you can share with Him.

This song is a prayer. Have you ever felt you can’t “…bring You my failures, my weaknesses too. I bring You my sorrows and give them all to You”?

Well, these are the things we need to bring to Him!

Ephesians 6:18 “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

Here is a great passage:

“Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:5-7)

Jesus will hear your prayer! And you can be sure that He will, to paraphrase the text, “Let you come to a place by His side (for) only there is your soul satisfied.”

"Have You Ever Heard That the Lord Loves You?"

Day 26

"Have You Ever Heard That the Lord Loves You?"

Have you ever heard that the Lord loves you
So much He was willing to die for you?
He’s planned such a beautiful life for you
That you would love Him as He loves you.

So turn back to God, He will heal your soul.
Now give Him your life He will make it whole.
Let Him be your guide as the days unfold.
You will find there is love, there is peace, there is joy,
And life everlasting for you.

Oh, there is a gift, a beautiful gift
That’s waiting for you my friend.
If you will believe it is yours to receive
A treasure that has no end.

Have you ever heard that the Lord that the loves
So much He was willing to die for you?
He’s planned such a beautiful life for you
That you would love Him as He loves you.

So turn back to God, He will heal your soul.
Now give Him your life He will make it whole.
Let Him be your guide as the days unfold.
You will find there is love, there is peace, there is joy,
And life everlasting for you.

Text: Margaret King
Music: John C. Hallett

Would you like a gift?

Gifts are things you don’t earn…you don’t work for….you can’t achieve. You just accept it. Receive it!

God has a wonderful gift for you. In fact, numerous gifts which are all wrapped up in His Son, Jesus. In Him you find love, healing, wholeness, guidance, peace, joy, life everlasting!

So, what should I do, you say? Receive it!

     Oh, there is a gift, a beautiful gift
     That’s waiting for you my friend.
     If you will believe it is yours to receive
     A treasure that has no end.

Romans 6:23 tells us “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”

"Walking With Him"

Day 25

"Walking With Him"

1. The love of my Saviour is sweeter to me,
The closer I walk to Him;
Each moment His presence in all I can see
The closer I walk to Him.

Refrain:

Walking with Him,
Walking with Him,
I want to walk closer to Jesus,
His grace is my pardon,
His blood is my plea,
And I want to walk closer to Him.

2. He’s dearer to me ev-‘ry step of the way,
The closer I walk to Him;
He brightens my pathway each hour of the day,
The closer I walk to Him.

Refrain

3. His honor and glory my tongue shall employ,
The closer I walk to Him;
For He fills my dark heart with sunshine and joy,
The closer I walk to Him.

At that time John published it through his own company, Radio Gospel Publishers, Ridgewood, New Jersey, copyright, 1946 by John C. Hallett.

"Walking With Him" is one of Ruth Hallett's favorite songs, written in the early part of John’s song writing career. In my conversations with Ruth over the years I can say that she has continually alluded to the sentiment of this song. This is the way she has walked in the intervening 60+ years since this song was written. Her life truly exudes the light of Jesus and the joy He gives. That all comes because she “walks close to Him.”

Let’s take inventory of our lives. Can we say that verse 2, for example, is true in our lives?
  He’s dearer to me ev-‘ry step of the way, The closer I walk to Him;
  He brightens my pathway each hour of the day, The closer I walk to Him.

There are many scriptures that come to mind as I read this song text. One in particular leaps out of two men who walked with Jesus after His resurrection. They didn’t recognize Him. But as they walked, let The Message pick up the story:

“Then he (Jesus) started at the beginning, with the Books of Moses, and went on through all the Prophets, pointing out everything in the Scriptures that referred to him.

hey came to the edge of the village where they were headed. He acted as if he were going on but they pressed him: "Stay and have supper with us. It's nearly evening; the day is done." So he went in with them. And here is what happened: He sat down at the table with them. Taking the bread, he blessed and broke and gave it to them. At that moment, open-eyed, wide-eyed, they recognized him. And then he disappeared.

Back and forth they talked. "Didn't we feel on fire as he conversed with us on the road, as he opened up the Scriptures for us?" (emphasis added)  (Luke 24:27-32 from The Message)

Note: you and I have the wonderful privilege of walking and talking with Jesus every moment of our lives.

How is your walk? Have you started?

If not, begin today. Talk to Jesus…begin reading about Him in the Bible. Start with the Gospel of Luke in the New Testament or the Gospel of John.

If you have any questions, contact me and I will be happy to help you.

If you are walking with Him, how close are you walking?

Do you talk to Him regularly? Do you learn about Him through His Word?

Read Psalm 16: A David Song

1-2 Keep me safe, O God, I've run for dear life to you.
I say to GOD, "Be my Lord!"
Without you, nothing makes sense.

3 And these God-chosen lives all around—
what splendid friends they make!

4 Don't just go shopping for a god.
Gods are not for sale.
I swear I'll never treat god-names
like brand-names.

5-6 My choice is you, GOD, first and only.
And now I find I'm your choice!
You set me up with a house and yard.
And then you made me your heir!

7-8 The wise counsel GOD gives when I'm awake
is confirmed by my sleeping heart.
Day and night I'll stick with GOD;
I've got a good thing going and I'm not letting go.

9-10 I'm happy from the inside out,
and from the outside in, I'm firmly formed.
You canceled my ticket to hell—
that's not my destination!

11 Now you've got my feet on the life path,
all radiant from the shining of your face.
Ever since you took my hand,
I'm on the right way.

"I Know He Loves Me"

Day 24

I Know He Loves Me

1. I know He loves me, I know He cares,
I know He watches over me,
I know He’ll keep me till that great day
When I, His blessed face shall see.
In live, in death, in pain or woe,
He’ll ne’er forsake me this I know;
I know He loves me, I know He cares,
I know He watches over me,

2. I know He loves me for night and day
My Shepherd leads me all the way.
Through days of sunshine He’s by my side,
And through the darkness He’s my guide.
O, I shall never walk alone,
He loves and cares for all His own.
I know He loves me night and day,
My Shepherd leads me all the way.

Day 22

“He Made The Blind to See”

1. Christ made the blind in flesh to see,
And gave redeeming sight to me;
He healed the lame and made them whole;
O, praise His Name, He healed my soul.

Refrain:

I know not how He pierced the night
And brought to me salvation’s sight,
But this I know of surety,
That I was blind and now I see.

2. In boundless love and sympathy,
Christ stooped to heal and ransom me;
Now I can know His peace and pow’r;
He walks with me each day and hour.

Test: Charlotte E. Arnold
Music: John C. Hallett

Charlotte Arnold, one of John’s collaborators, presents a biblical principle in this text.

The scripture says, “first the natural, then the spiritual.” v. 46 “The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.” ((1 Corinthians 15:46)

First the natural: Jesus made the blind to see.

Then the spiritual: He gave redeeming sight to me;

First the natural: He healed the lame and made them whole;

Then the spiritual: O, praise His Name, He healed my soul.

In nature we have some examples of dramatic changes: Caterpillar becomes a butterfly through the process of metamorphasis . Also, The tadpole becomes a frog.

How do we receive information?
  • Visually: through the eye gate. We learn by seeing, watching, visual associations
  • Auditory: through the ear gate. We learn by listening to verbal instructions.  Remembering sounds of words, music!
  • Kinaesthetically: through feelings and emotions. “Hands on” learning by doing, becoming involved and actually doing something. “Tactile” = perceptible by the touch; tangible.
God uses these same faculties to reveal Himself to us through the working of the Holy Spirit.

For example: God’s working in the spiritual. Study these two passages:

     Luke 11:9-10 “ask,” (auditory), “seek,” (visually), “knock” ( kinesthetically)

     I John 1:1 “We have heard” (auditory), “we have seen” (visually), “our hands have touched” (kinesthetically)

So, in our understanding of God, know that He starts with the known and leads us into the realm of the spiritual.

“I know not how He pierced the night and brought to me salvation’s sight,
But this I know of surety that I was blind and now I see.”

We may not be able to explain exactly how God works in our life, but we can say with Charlotte Arnold, who echoed the blind man healed by Jesus: “One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!" (John 9:25)

Day 21

* Dedicated to Major David J. Gunster, USAF.

“America, You’re Beautiful to Me”

America, America, you’re beautiful to me;
I love your land so bountiful from sea to shining sea.
America, America, I’m proud as I can be,
America, my America, you’re beautiful to me.

* Major David J. Gunster, USAF, gallantly gave his life for his country in Vietnam, 1968.

Ruth Hallett, the widow of John Hallett, wrote this note when she sent me this piece of music: “A great song for a Patriotic service! This was my brother, David, killed in Vietnam 1968. This song was dedicated in his memory.”

This is a simple, up-tempo inspiring song of pure patriotism. And, why not? Don’t YOU love America? We have our problems, but, as I heard a man say when I was a kid, “It’s (America) still the best thing afloat!”

We are blessed to live in a country with the freedoms we have! People are willing to risk their lives to come here.

Let’s not take this wonderful country for granted. Today, let’s thank God for our nation and let’s pray for our nation. Pray for our President and all of our leaders.

You know, something might just happen if we in this country would start praying together for our nation.

Let’s proclaim: “America, my America, you’re beautiful to me.”

“To Stand for God and Right"

Day 20

“To Stand for God and Right"
(Dedicated to Northeastern Bible School)

To stand for God and right
And know His word
To walk in truth and light
To please the Lord,
To tell to all the world the gospel story
This is our one desire
To serve the One who set us free.

Copyright 1951 by John C. Hallett.

Of the many things that John Hallett did in his life, one of the most meaningful, long-lasting and impacting for the Kingdom of God was when he and two friends started Northeastern Bible School. He wrote this song expressing the desire of the students.

Let’s examine each of the parts of this song. I would say that each section is still relevant almost 60 years after this was written.

To stand for God and right
 Let’s follow the example of Josiah, the young king as recorded in 2 Kings 2:22” “He did right in the sight of the LORD and walked in all the way of his father David, nor did he turn aside to the right or to the left.

Micah 6:8 He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

And know His word
 Psalm 119:9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.
Philippians 3:10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

To walk in truth and light
I John 1:5-9 “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

To please the Lord,
Colossians 1:10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,

1 Thessalonians 4:1 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.

Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him."

Romans 14:17-19 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men. Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.”

To tell to all the world the gospel story
 Matthew 16:15 And He said to them, " Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

Romans 1:16 “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.”

This is our one desire to serve the One who set us free.
Psalm 100:2 Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing.

2 Corinthians 5:15 “And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”

Psalm 119:45 “I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out Your precepts.”

2 Corintiahsn 3:17 “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

“Jesus, Draw Near”

Day 19

“Jesus, Draw Near”

1. Lord, draw near and with Thy pow’r
Bind us closer in this hour;
Through Thy Word, O Spirit divine,
Cleanse and make us wholly Thine.

Refrain:

Jesus, draw near,
Jesus, draw near,
Cleanse me, O Saviour, and fill with Thy Spirit,
O Jesus, Thyself, draw near, draw near, just now.

2. Lord, draw near and enter in
Ev- ‘ry heart, so filled with sin;
Hear us now, O Saviour, we pray,
Ev- ‘ry stain now wash away.

Test: Ruth G. Hallett
Music: John C. Hallett

This prayer song written by Ruth and John was one of their heart cries. They both walked in a close relationship with Jesus, but, even so, this was their prayer. It was also the prayer, as mentioned in verse 2, that people come to know Jesus as their personal Savior.

What a great prayer for all of us….to draw near to God and be filled with His Spirit.

Hebrews 10:22 instructs: “let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.”

James 4:8: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”

Let us do that….but I believe we can make this a prayer request, too: “Jesus, draw near.”

"Fear Not, O Child of God"

Day 18

Fear Not, O Child of God

1. Fear not, O child of God,
What-e’er the trouble be,
The grace divine He will supply
To keep, to keep thy spirit free.

Refrain:
Trust God without reserve,
The best is yet to be
To share with Christ His home above,
To reign with Him eternally.

2. Fear not, O child of God,
Temptations cannot harm
If we but look to Him for aid,
And trust, and trust His mighty arm.

3. Fear not, O child of God,
When sorrow rends thy soul,
The healing balm He will supply
To make, to make thy spirit whole.

Fear binds. Fear paralyzes. Fear does everything opposite of “keeping your spirit free.” Fear can eventually destroy.

The scriptures are filled with admonitions to “fear not,” “don’t be afraid,” “do not fear.” Read the text of this song, which happens to be the last song text written by A.H. Ackley and given to his friend, John Hallett a short time before Ackley passed away. A.H. was a prolific songwriter, who wrote over 1,500 gospel songs and hymns.. One of his most sung and well-known pieces is “He Lives” (“I serve a risen Savior, He’s in the world today.”)

The song text instructs us to:

Fear nottrouble
Fear nottemptation
Fear notsorrow

Let God’s eternal Word speak to your heart as you see that we need to Fear Not, O Child of God.

1. Fear not…trouble

There are many contexts in which people experience trouble. Listen to these instructions. To see the “trouble,” read the context.

Isa 35:3-4: “Encourage the exhausted, and strengthen the feeble. Say to those with anxious heart, ‘Take courage, fear not.’”

Jer 30:10 “ Fear not, O Jacob My servant,' declares the Lord, 'And do not be dismayed, O Israel; For behold, I will save you from afar And your offspring from the land of their captivity. And Jacob will return and will be quiet and at ease, And no one will make him afraid.”

Isa 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Isa 41:13 “For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. “

Jer 30:10 “do not fear, O Jacob my servant; do not be dismayed, O Israel,' declares the Lord.”

Zep 3:16-17 “On that day they will say to Jerusalem, "Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands hang limp. The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing."

1 Pe 3:13-15 “Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened."

Lk 1:30-31 “And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God.”
And, behold, thou shall conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS.”

Lk 8:50 (Jesus speaking to the father whose daughter had died) “But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.”

Lk 12:7 (Admonition not to fear the circumstances of life) “But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.”

Mt 14:27-29 (Jesus walking on the water in the midst of the storm) “But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," he said.”

Refrain:
Trust God without reserve,
The best is yet to be
To share with Christ His home above,
To reign with Him eternally.

We are encouraged to trust God without holding back. God promises that our troubles, sorrows,
will not last forever. In fact, He has promised eternal life to those who trust in Him.

2. Fear not…temptation.

Jesus will help you through any type of temptation.

Jesus taught His disciples to pray: “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.” (Matthew 6:13)

The apostle Paul reminded his readers that “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

And Peter reminds his readers that “the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation” (2 Peter 2:9)

Jesus is faithful to protect and pray for each of us. He will guard, come to our aid, and ever lives to pray (intercede) for each of us!

“For I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.” (2 Timothy 1:12-13)

“Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.” (Heb 2:17-18)

“He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7:25)

3. Fear not…sorrow.

Isa 51:11-13: “The ransomed of the Lord will return. They will enter Zion with singing;everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away. "I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mortal men, the sons of men, who are but grass, that you forget the Lord your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth, that you live in constant terror every day because of the wrath of the oppressor, who is bent on destruction?"

In the midst of our sorrow, God provides comfort!

2 Co 1:3-7 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.”

2 Corinthians 7:6 “God, who comforts the downcast,”

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.

"That Glorious Day"

Day 17

That Glorious Day

1. No tears tomorrow O blessed promise!
With burdens ended we’ll weep no more;
His joyful presence will banish sorrow
In God’s tomorrow, forever more.

Chorus:
No tears tomorrow, no sadness there,
No tears tomorrow, no pain or care;
All grief and heartaches He’ll take away,
In God’s tomorrow that glorious day!

2. No night, no darkness He’ll be our sunlight,
The broken hearted once more will sing
No pain, no dying in that great homeland
Where God will meet us and be our king.

Everywhere we turn in our world we see sadness, tears, darkness, burdens. It is in the headlines, in our families, in our jobs, everywhere.

Would you like a year without tears? Year, you say! How about a day!

Verse 1 includes this line: "His joyful presence will banish sorrow"

Well, even now there is joy for us! Psalm 16:11 states “You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

Psalm 21:6 For You make him most blessed forever; You make him joyful with gladness in Your presence.

Psalm 43:4 Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and upon the lyre I shall praise You, O God, my God.

The chorus says; "No tears tomorrow, no sadness there, No tears tomorrow, no pain or care;"

Life is filled with sorrow and difficulty. But, there is a hope that comes from trusting in Jesus. One day He has promised that all tears will be wiped away!

This is the promise in Revelation 21:3-5: And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."

Verse 2 concludes with “No pain, no dying in that great homeland, Where God will meet us and be our king.”

Revelation 19:15 describes Jesus Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords! He will have the last word!

The Bible ends with these words: "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you[e] this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."

The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life. (Revelation 22:16-17)

Why not come to Jesus today? Give Him your sorrows and let him give you His peace both now and for all eternity!

"It Was the Cross"

Day 16

Inscribed to my good friend, Talmadge J. Bittikofer
It Was the Cross

1. I sought for peace, but I sought in vain,
I was seized with deep despair
But the cross arose in outline plain,
And the peace I sought was there.

Refrain:
It was the cross,
It was the cross,
On which my Lord was crucified.
It was the cross,
It was the cross,
On which my blessed Savior died.

2. I longed for rest for my load was great
And the way was long and drear.
But an earnest look removed the weight
And it gave me hope and cheer.

3. I tried the world with its pleasures gay;
They were only empty dross,
But the burden fell and rolled away
When I found the Saviour’s cross.

Because of the cross, we can have peace:

Colossians 1:19-23 “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel.”

1 Corinthians 17-18 “For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

Ephesians 2:13-15 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace,

Just before Jesus was crucified on the cross , He told His disciples:   "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
(John 14:27)   "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."  (John 16:33)

The day of His resurrection [ Jesus Appears to His Disciples ] On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" (John 20:19)

Because of the cross, we can have rest.

Matthew 11:27-29 Jesus said: "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Because of the cross, we can have freedom from burdens.

2 Corinthians 3:17 “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

What is your need today? Find peace, rest and freedom by looking to the cross.

“Look to the cross” does not imply there is something “special” about the wood structure, but the sinless Man who gave His life on the cross for us. His substitutionary death allows you and me to be free from the penalty of sin, therefore with the opportunity to receive peace, rest and freedom.

"Through The Day"

Day 15

Affectionately Inscribed to my Mother and Dad
Through The Day

1. Wake me in the morning,
Thinking thoughts of Thee;
Take me thru the noonday
Serving faithfully;
Strengthen in the evening
When my strength declines.
Fill me with Thy praises
‘til Thy glory shines.

2. Bless me, O my Father
Early in the day.
Make me, then, a blessing
Ev-‘ry hour, I pray.
Through the passing moments
Keep me close to Thee
For I pray that only Christ be seen in me.

One time I asked Ruth to give me a list of 5 or 6 of her favorites songs of John’s. I know that was terrible of me to ask since she had many! She wrote back, “You are correct in thinking this is a difficult assignment to list 5 or 6 of my favorite songs written by John! But here goes!!!”

I’ve already done several that were on her list, but “Through the Day” was one of them. It was written by one of his collaborators, Charlotte Arnold.

May this song be our prayer.

Verse 1: May your thoughts and actions be directed towards Him and by Him morning, noon and evening.

Psalm 5:3 In the morning, O LORD, You will hear my voice;In the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch.

Psalm 59:16 But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.

Psalm 88:13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

Psalm 90:14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
Psalm 42:8 By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life.

Psalm 92:2 To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning and Your faithfulness by night,

Psalm 10:17 O LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear

Verse 2: May you be blessed by the Lord every hour of the day as you walk with Him and He is seen in you.

Psalm 21:3 For You meet him with the blessings of good things;You set a crown of fine gold on his head.

Psalm 24:5 He shall receive a blessing from the LORDAnd righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Proverbs 10:22 It is the blessing of the LORD that makes rich,And He adds no sorrow to it.

Colossians 1:26-28 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.

“There’s No Disappointment In Jesus”

Day 14

“There’s No Disappointment In Jesus”

1. There's no disappointment in Jesus,
He's more than my tongue can tell;
His love is so sure and so steadfast,
His friendship divine will not fail.

Chorus:
There's no disappointment in Jesus,
He's all that He promised to be;
His love and His care comfort me everywhere;
He is no disappointment to me.

2. There's no disappointment in Jesus,
Tho' sorrows may press me sore;
He comforts with tender compassion,
His love cheers my heart evermore.

3. There's no disappointment in Jesus,
He satisfies me always;
So strong and so willing to help me,
In Him I find comfort each day.

Of the songs that have endured through church history, many seem to have a common bond: they are “born” out of some deep struggle or trial in the life of the composer. These songs “touch the heart.” Who has not been moved upon hearing the story of Horatio Spafford, a successful Chicago attorney and father of five? What a series of events: his only son suddenly died; the great Chicago fire wiped out the family’s extensive real estate investments; two years later he lost his four daughters when an ocean liner sank. Out of those tragedies came a standard of the church, “It Is Well With My Soul.” (see yesterday’s blog) Louisa Stead was a young mother who was left with a small daughter after her husband drowned attempting to save the life of a young boy drowning in the ocean. Out of that tragedy came a song that has ministered to untold numbers of people, “’Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus.” Luther Bridges was able to write the words “Though sometimes He leads through waters deep, trials fall across the way; thought sometimes the path seems rough and steep, see His foot-prints all the way,” following the death of his wife and three sons in a fire while he was away conducting revival meetings in Kentucky.

Some of John Hallett’s most endearing and enduring songs came out of great difficulty. Perfumes and other fragrances come when petals are crushed. So, too, God allows men and women to go through the “crushing” process so the fragrance of Jesus can be evident in their lives.

This is probably one of John’s most popular songs. For many years it was sung as a solo in many places around the country.  (For the "old timers" it was page 37 in Favorites No. 2, the much used series from Singspiration Publishing House)

In John’s own words, this is The Story Behind The Song from an undated edition of the Children’s Bible Hour News:

“Discouraged, downhearted… ‘blue,’ and not knowing which way to turn, I was ready to give up. Many disappointments had fallen and were almost more than I could bear. I could to nothing but fall on my knees and tell the Lord all about it. The Lord spoke to me and the words ‘No Disappointments in Jesus’ seemed to stand boldly before me. And so that night came this beautiful song with this melody and harmony.

“A few months later an evangelist friend in the East asked for the privilege of publishing it. Since then, it has appeared in many song publications and has had a wide ministry over the radio throughout America. There are disappointments on every hand but ‘There is No Disappointment in Jesus.’” Written in Chicago in 1940.

Are you discouraged today? Give that discouragement to Jesus!

God can “provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” (61:3)

“The prophet Isaiah describes a God who will replace His people's suffering with joy, and remove the ashes and grime that cover them to reveal the beauty beneath.” (http://www.gospel.com/topics/beauty+for+ashes)

So, give all of your disappointments to Jesus and let Him turn them into joy.

“It Is Well With My Soul”

Day 13

“It Is Well With My Soul”
Inscribed to James Kallam

1. When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

2. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

3. And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

So, how is it with you today? Is it well?
How about your spiritual condition?
Spiritual condition will addressed in today’s song.

John Hallett took the verses of one of the great hymns of the church, added a new melody and a wonderful piano accompaniment and created a great arrangement! For most people this will be a “new arrangement” although it is over 50 years old.

Written for solo voice, the verse opens with a “blues” feel. John was a great pianist and he loved a variety of chords and harmonies. He was not afraid to do “new things.”

Dynamically, the piece grows in intensity from mezzo piano (mp) at the beginning until the fermata just before the end of the verse that is sung fortissimo (ff)! At the end of the piece, Hallett brings back timing of the familiar version with an emphasis on “It is well.” The piece ends with the piano playing pianissimo (pp). It is as if he says, “My soul is at peace. All is well!”

If you are a pianist, you will have fun with this piece. This piece is inscribed to James Kallam, John Hallett's friend of many years and fellow professor at Northeastern Bible Institute in Essex Fells, New Jersey.

Today's blog is dedicated to my friend and wonderful church musician, Paul Ferrin. Paul knew John and loved a number of his songs.  Regarding the tune of "It Is Well,," Paul wrote to me, "I think that is my top favorite of anything he's ever done."  To see the music, scroll to the end of the blog.  You can enlarge the music by clicking on the page you desire to see.

Verse 1

Do you know that the Bible talks about peace being like a river?

Isaiah 66:12 For thus says the LORD, "Behold, I extend peace to her like a river,And the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream."

Isaiah 48:18 "If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the sea."

God wanted to give peace to Israel, but they didn’t listen to Him.

He offers peace to us “like a river.” A river bring life and movement and refreshing and, oh, so much more!

Can you say like the old spiritual “I’ve got peace like a river ina my soul.”
When do we need peace? Particularly “when sorrows like sea billows roll.”

Jesus gave us these words: "These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

The Psalmist had confidence in the Lord no matter what happened. He stated: “But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you.” (Psalm 33:18-22)

Verse 2

Ever been buffeted? The word means “strike against forcefully,” as in “The winds buffeted the tent.” In the middle of difficult trials there is a “blest assurance” that takes control of our lives and that assurance is found in Jesus Christ who saw our “helpless estate” and did something about it! He gave His life for us on the cross so that we would have forgiveness of sin and the ability to be in relationship to Him.

Verse 3 describes the glorious hope we have in Jesus Christ. In fact, the writer asks God to speed up that day!

So, as we wait for that day, let us do what the Psalmist did:

Psalm 63:8 My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.

Psalm 94:19 When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.

In the end…whatever our situation…we proclaim “It is well with my soul!”

I have a Friend

Day 12

"I Have A Friend"

1. I have a friend who dwells within,
Jesus, I love Him;
He has cleansed all my heart from sin.
Jesus, I love Him.
A home in heaven He’s prepared for me
Oh, glorious day when His face I’ll see;
I have a friend who dwells within,
Jesus, I love Him.

2. I have a friend who cares for me,
Jesus, I love Him;
I love Him for He first loved me,
Jesus, I love Him.
And now He lives in heav’n and prayer for me
This wondrous Saviour who from sin sets free;
I have a friend who dwells within,
Jesus, I love Him.

“I have a Friend”
Words and music: John C. Hallett

This is one of the earlier pieces written by John Hallett. From the beginning he established the theme of many of his songs: his friend, Jesus.

Verse 1 deals with several aspects of that friendship:

First, the friend “dwells within.”

Another word for “dwells” is to “live.” John 14:16 says that the Spirit of God lives in us. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will bein you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”

“Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?” I Corinthians 3:16

 Second, that “dwelling” is the result of His cleansing “all my heart from sin.”

I John 1:6-8 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin."

Third, there is the wonderful hope presented by this Friend: He’s prepared a place in heaven for him and he looks forward to seeing his Friend!

John 14 Jesus said that He went to prepare a place for us. 14:2-3: "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. "If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.”

Verse 2 describes more of the relationship:

First, He cares for me.

Look what Jesus taught in Matthew 6:25-33:  "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Second, John loved Him because “He first loved me.”

We learn that from 1 John 4:18-19: “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us.”

Third, this Friend “lives in heaven and he prayer for me.”

Hebrews 7:25 affirms this: “Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”
