Marked off with the span of His hand!

Over the last ten days I have talked about meditating day and night on God’s Word and having His praise continually be in my mouth.  One way to accomplish this is to have our hearts and minds filled with the right things.  The bible says that it is out of the abundance (the overflow) of the heart that the mouth speaks.
So, if we want to praise God, we need to know Him.  We learn of Him as we meditate on His Word, as we pray, as we study, as we talk with people.  One way to get to know God more is to see what the Bible says about God.

Today I will begin a series on the attributes of God.  The first attribute is that God is Infinite.

Infinite:  We cannot speak of measure, amount, size, or weight and at the same time be speaking of God, for He is beyond measurement. God has no beginning, no end, and no limits.

Hear what Romans 11:33 says.  This is listed in the New International Version as a Doxology
33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
   How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!

Exactly!  How can ever begin to figure out a God who has no limits?!  We only know “things” or “events” or people by how big they are or who fast they can run or…and it goes on and on.

One verse that blows my mind is found in Isaiah 40, verse 12.  In context it reads:

11 Like a shepherd He will tend His flock,
In His arm He will gather the lambs
And carry them in His bosom;
He will gently lead the nursing ewes.
12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand,
And marked off the heavens by the span,
And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure,
And weighed the mountains in a balance
And the hills in a pair of scales?
13 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD,
Or as His counselor has informed Him?

“And marked off the heavens by the span,”  (approximately 9 inches)   A span is the distance measured by a human hand, from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little finger. In ancient times, a span was considered to be half a cubit.  If God does this to the heavens, how big IS He?

God marks off the heavens by the span of His hand!  The heavens are so vast, no telescope is powerful enough to see the end!  Scientists have no idea how large the universe is, and we read that God measures it with the span of His hand!

Friends, we serve a mighty and powerful God.  Yet, this Infinite God loved us so much that it is recorded in the Gospel of John:  “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”  (John 3:16-17)

You’ve seen those John 3:16 signs in football games and other sporting events.  What are people trying to do with those signs?  Tell people that the infinite God love people and He did something about it

Why not accept what He did by receiving His Son into your life today?

If you did, sent me a note.  I would love to pray with you and help you learn more about God.
